Use Massage to Treat Your Backaches

If you are suffering from persistent back pain and have to resort to pain reliever pills, stop. It is time to solve the problem with massage.

A recent study funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine was conducted based on 400 adults with moderate-to-severe low back pain lasting for at least three months. They were given either weekly whole-body massages for relaxation, or weekly massages that focused on specific muscle problems around the lower back and hips for 10 weeks.

After the trial, participants were invited back for a check-up, and the results were positive. Both massage groups reported greater average improvements in pain and functioning. And the type of massage they received didn’t seem to matter. About 36% and 39% of patients in the massage groups said their pain was nearly or completely gone (More on the study here: http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/news/20110705/study-massage-helps-treat-low-back-pain).

Although a majority of the participants only enjoy a modest improvement, massage still seems to be the best way forward for alternative medication in managing back pain. Other alternative medications include manual therapies by chiropractors. Although some benefitted from visiting chiropractors, doctors claimed that side effects, such as strokes, might be possible (check out this link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2156179/Letting-chiropractor-crack-neck-ease-pain-trigger-stroke.html).
